Hey girls,
Can everyone be at the Maka's at 10:00 rather than 10:15? That will be perfect timing for the movie (since right after the movie I need to leave).
Please leave a comment here so I know you got this news...

Literature: LAST CLASS!
Hey girlies!
Next Friday we'll be watching The Importance of Being Earnest. (There is a scene where one of the girls is daydreaming that I'll fast-forward, because there's some heavy kissing. Otherwise it's very clean. And funny!)
Please come on time - at 10:15 - and be prepared to stay until 12 if possible.
Sign up here to bring something breakfasty! (Can someone please bring orange juice or orange pineapple banana ... or something orangey and juicy?? :))
Love, Ally
P.S. History party: don't forget to meet at the Maka's at 9:30 on Wednesday for pictures and lunch in old town Frederick!! We'll be home at 2:30.

History
We will be having class at the Wikner's house this Wednesday. Since we started North and South (Elizabeth Gaskell) last week, Ellie volunteered her house for a tea party and staying late for whoever wants to finish the movie. Same time, 9:30 but probably won't be finished with the movie until 12:30 or 1. The staying late is optional....
Don't forget:
-your reading assignments
-take notes because i will be grading them
-your outline

Literature: The Ten Commandments of Detective Fiction
Have fun with this list, girlies. :)
1. The criminal must be mentioned in the early part of the story, but must not be anyone whose thoughts the reader has been allowed to know.
2. All supernatural or preternatural agencies are ruled out as a matter of course.
3. Not more than one secret room or passage is allowable.
4. No hitherto undiscovered poisons may be used, nor any appliance which will need a long scientific explanation at the end.
5. No Chinaman must figure in the story.
6. No accident must ever help the detective, nor must he ever have an unaccountable intuition which proves to be right.
7. The detective himself must not commit the crime.
8. The detective is bound to declare any clues which he may discover.
9. The stupid friend of the detective, the Watson, must not conceal from the reader any thoughts which pass through his mind: his intelligence must be slightly, but very slightly, below that of the average reader.
10. Twin brothers, and doubles generally, must not appear unless we have been duly prepared for them.
Love, Ally

Literature: homework due 4/3
Girlies,
I love that you commented so much last week. It's neat hearing what you all think, and what you're hoping to do. :)
Guess what? You're to read *ALL* of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this week! (Eep!) ...It's a much shorter book than I thought - only 100 pages - so we're shortening it to just one week...which may open us up for a party on the last day of class. (Aw - sniff. I'm gonna miss you girls this summer!!)
I do want you to still do a bio on Robert Louis Stevenson, but rather than doing it in paper form, you can do it in bullet form. Obviously, you are not allowed to copy and paste this information from websites. Research the author just as you would a normal bio.
Love you all and see ya next week!

History HW
Hi lovely girls,
GREAT job on your projects this week! I was very impressed - especially with that singing Abby! :)
-Here's your HW for next week.
Reading:
-The Civil War 1850-1895 pg. 115-122
-Eyewitness to the Civil War pg. 246-283, 293-341, 351-377 (This looks like alot, but you don't have to read all the stuff on the sides, just read the main narrative. Of course you can read all the cool extra stuff if you want to!)
Memorizing the Gettysburg Address:
In the same teams as you had for your battle project....
Team 1: Ellie B, Kayla, Hannah
Team 2: Ellie W, Abby, Nicki
You will memorize the Gettysburg Address.
-You do not need to get together w/ your groups but should probably divide up the Adress in 3 parts. (email or call eachother)
-You will then present it in class. And I hope it will be with some nice dramatic reading :D You can even dress up if you want.
I think we should have a Civil War party. Come dressed up if you want, bring some food, and after our discussion we'll finish Gettysburg (hopefully finish it).
Loves!!

Literature: quote
Girlies,
Of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, editor Emory Eliot said that it's hard to study because it's "too unlike what we expect of a novel, and too much like what we find in life."
I have found this to be delightfully true! I just thought you'd enjoy that quote. :)

History Info
Hi Moms and girlies,
-We ARE Going to have our field trip next week, January 14. A mom kindly reminded me that the week after is probably going to be a zoo in D.C. because of the inaugaration. So, the 14th it is. We are going to meet here at my house at 9:30, regular time. I am wondering if 2 moms would be so kind as to transfer us to the Shady Grove Metro Station. This will save $$ on parking and be an easier way I think.
We will get the after-rush-hour rate for the Metro (I will find out how much Metro should be and post it later). We will be home by 4pm. And if again, I could have 2 moms pick us up at the Shady Grove Metro Station, that would be super. Please email me if you are available: lauren.rohwer@gmail.com
-Homework:
Antebellum America, pages 277-293
Presidents book on Zachary Taylor
Take notes please!
And don't worry about reviewing for the test. I am pushing it back another week. :D
Note:
for the field trip: dress warmly, bring some cash, pack a lunch or bring money for one, bring a cell phone if you have it,and bring a small notebook and pen.
